It won't be anything you'll ever think of putting together in a salad since this is a special dish.

You will need:

1 red or pink grapefruit
1-2 green chillies (de-seeded if you wish)
1 sprig of fresh coriander
1 large clove of freshly burnt garlic
salt to taste

Cut the grapefruit ends then peel it like an orange. Carefully remove all the bits into a dish making sure no seeds or the white pith gets in. You don't want to squash and pull the flesh off and turn the whole thing into grapefruit juice so be gentle and leave it intact. A 'lil squashing and juice is fine.

Finely chop the chillies and coriander and add it in along with enough salt to taste

Now, if you're not an adult then please get someone who knows how to use a cooker for the next bit. What you need to do is take the unpeeled garlic clove and burn it over the cooker. That's right, burn it over an open fire. It has to turn nice and soft and if it burns too much then don't worry about it, it all adds to the taste! Don't wash it otherwise all the taste will be gone, now chop that nicely and add it in and mix well.

Ta-da! Grapefruit salad!

Tips

Buy firm grapefruits, if you get ones that are a 'lil pudgy or squash easily then they'll be bitter. You want sour!

Everything is added to taste so change accordingly.

If you don't have a gas cooker for open burning just make a bonfire in your local park...just kidding! You can use fresh garlic, although burnt garlic has a distinct taste. Don't worry too much though.

Eat this on a lovely hot, summer's afternoon. I don't know why but it just tastes better.

Eat it on the day you make it, if you save it for breakfast then the grapefruit will turn very bitter.

If you're not a grapefruit fan then you can substitute it for other exotic sour fruits like green mangoes (not the horrid things they call 'mangoes' in Tesco please) and slice them verrrry thinly. You can buy them from Asian food shops, they're usually very small and very sour. If mangoes aren't your thing either then unripe pineapple chopped into small chunks will do too.

Have fun,
Sunday.

Beanzawave!?

A very crazy idea...

Apparently Heinz have designed a microwave for those busy folk who don't have time to move from their seats at lunchtime, and so can plug in a mini microwave into their laptop!? Oh it's also thought it may help students for when they are 'studying' away in their rooms. Most students are already so damn lazy ( i speak from experience) do we need another excuse to be even more lazy.Is there really such a need for this device? I think it's a lil cute, many would disagree though and think it's pretty ugly. Would you pay 100quid for something that you could plug into your laptop, allowing you to heat up your food? bearing in mind that it has to be small enough to fit into the microwave , sorry beanzawave..

If you think it's a good idea then you better let Heinz know as they're waiting to hear from the public before this product goes into production. I went to look and there was a tall, almost dodgy (in retrospect) guy talking furiously about wanting to borrow an iron! I was thinking ‘what the heck…’ when he kept insisting ‘it’ll just be for 5 minutes’. Then She started to talk furiously next to my ear too about who he was, what he wanted, what does he need an iron for etc and I was like ‘OMG what do I do!’ In the panic I only asked him where he lives and he vaguely replied next door downstairs. So to shut them both up I gave him the iron…doh! I was so confused and in a panicky state it just happened! Then he started eyeing the pieces of wood we had outside our door and asked if we needed them, I asked Her and she said no so I said no and he took them. Then two minutes later…She went MENTAL! ‘How could he con us like that and take the wood!!’ So…5 minutes later…no iron…3 hours later…still no iron! Of course She went crazy and secretly I did worry a little, why would anyone want to go into so much trouble to steal an iron! It was a very weird day, and I heard a lot of nagging and moaning *rolls eyes*. I was also forced to go knocking at his door to get it back and surprise surprise, no one was in!

So, the moral of the story is…ASK! Seriously, that guy didn’t even live in our building, I’ve never seen him in my life and he looked very ned-ish (chav-ish). Even though he kept insisting it’d be 5 minutes, I should’ve asked who he is and get a proper address. Or better yet, refuse politely! I only panicked ‘coz I was pressured from both the guy and Her. T’was crazy, don’t give away things to random people! I know you’re thinking ‘that’s easy to refuse’ well actually it’s not.

Oh and did I get the iron back? I did! The next day I was sitting in the car when the guy stopped outside his building. I managed to get it back without any trouble (I was knocking at the wrong door on the wrong floor…). So this story has a happy ending and I’ve learnt a valuable lesson to be not so giving.

Anyone else have crazy times like this? How did you deal with it? Bet it was nothing like me…

Sunday

Tips for the Economy

I know (not really) that a lot of you working folk are struggling with the current economy, especially with over-social friends, gadget hungry kids, and shoe/bag impulses so I've got a list of great money saving tips!
